It’s the year 1802 in Avignon, France…

Noah Capet has spent most of his young life living simple and unvaried days in the hushed countryside of southern France. Quiet, reserved, and diffident, his preference for existing is to do so in solitude, keeping to himself both in town and on his family’s farm—a predilection that’s altogether disrupted when a newcomer to town by the name of Jeremie Perreault begins an unremitting quest to befriend him.

Jeremie is everything Noah is not. Charismatic and gregarious, he leaves a trail of charmed admirers in his wake wherever he goes. Expressive and idealistic, he talks without end about his deep love for old books and his spirited dream to one day travel the world on a literary pilgrimage.

Over the course of a single summer, the two form an unlikely friendship, but just as quickly as it develops, it soon entirely dissolves as they’re forced to face the truth of what has unexpectedly emerged between them.

Lavender in Bloom is a tender and tragic coming-of-age story about first love and self-discovery, and a poignant reminder that time is fleeting and always takes with it the choices we’re too afraid to make.

excerpt

The music formally began and, with it, the dance. Noah’s body was stiff as he bowed along with the other men, the women curtsying. Already, Noah was sweating. It was as if the entire room had caught fire, and he couldn’t understand how no one else felt the blaze of the flames. Focus on Margaux, he told himself. He reached for the satin fingers of her elbow-length glove when they closed the space between them.
“You’re doing just fine,” she whispered quickly before they parted, assuming his distress stemmed from self-consciousness. If Margaux believed he could survive this unpleasant social ritual, then he would. Or so he told himself. Except that the part of the dance he’d most dreaded had now come upon him. Each couple was to presently join hands with their immediate neighbors, the four of them then walking in a circle counterclockwise. The girls easily clasped hands as was expected of them. Then Jeremie extended a hand to Noah, and Noah had to stop himself from drawing back. He didn’t move.
“Noah!” Camilla hissed. He was embarrassing her. The other couples were already turning in their circles while his own quartet remained stationary because of his faltering. Realizing his hesitancy would only draw attention, he surrendered his hand. The contact lasted but a few breaths, for no more than a string of heartbeats easily counted. But for Noah, it was an eternity. It was a moment on his hill back at the farm, where time stretched impossibly, dropping a person into a pocket full of forevers. It was yesterday, today, and a multitude of tomorrows, and most of all, it was Jeremie. His skin ever so warm, so soft. It was his poetry and books, his curiosity and joy, the kindness in his eyes and the way Noah’s name sounded when it left his lips. It was all these things, and all these things kindled a spark in Noah.

image1I couldn’t make myself comfortable. As I continued to shrug, he clasped my shoulders tighter. If I leaned against my car, his hips would press against me. I sagged in defeat and avoided direct contact with his eyes. This was worse than him thinking we could be friends.
“Since you’re big, bad boss of this whole operation, what’s going on with the bachelor party?” The man wriggled his eyebrows at me when I looked up. It was such a laughable action.
Levi was the ultimate bachelor…and rebel. He kept his hair long, rarely shaved, and often dressed in button up shirts with the first three buttons undone and sleeves rolled up, showing off his constant tan. He exuded bad-to-the-bone. And he loved it.
No doubt he had particular ideas on what Jake’s bachelor party should be like. I had more than enough of a fight to deal with, why would I add a few more in the way of silicon-filled strippers?
“What bachelor party? I’m not in charge of that. I’ve never planned one, and don’t intend to start. It’s your job as the best man to figure it out.” I poked my finger at his chest. Hard, warm chest, with a steady fluttering from his heart.
“Is it?” He took my hand in his and flattened my palm on his chest, halting my ministrations. I stared at my fingertips touching his exposed skin. “Maybe you and I can get together soon, just us, and you can give me ideas.” A number of salacious scenes flashed in my mind. I gulped, realizing my mistake, but the heat had ebbed up my neck and cheeks.
Drawing back my hand, I replied, “If you need help, you can call Chase.” I spun around to the back of my car, reached in and took out a card from my purse, ignoring the blush on my cheeks and hoping he would, too. The hand that was squeezing my shoulder smoothed its way down to the small of my back when I faced him again. I tried not to focus on the sudden, pleasant warmth in my belly. This was Levi, Casanova of the Bay area…and beyond!
He took the proffered card. “She’s the expert on all things…naughty.” Chase would kill me if she found out I gave him her number. “I have to go.”
He removed his hand from my back and held my door open for me.
image6As I settled in my seat, he stuck his head in my car and surprised me with a swift kiss on my cheek, rendering me speechless with how pleasant it felt. Levi had never been this close to me before. I’d never allowed it.
After shutting the door closed for me, he leaned his arms over the opened window and cocked his head to one side. Playfulness washed over his face. “Veronica, you may not like me, but whether you like it or not, I will be around whenever Jake asks me to be there. So you’ll have to get used to us being together…a lot.” It felt like he was trying to say more, but I simply nodded my head, and started the car. I waited for him to back away, before I sped off. I was flustered enough to accidentally run over the guy.

Courage in Patience:
Courage to endure.

Courage to survive.

Courage to overcome.

Tenacious 14-year-old Ashley Asher claws her way back to normalcy after enduring six years of an unimaginable Hell. Uprooted from her negligent and selfish mother, Ashley finds solace in the safety of her father’s home. Building a relationship with her stepmother, she’s finally able to open up and confront the past that haunts her.

With the help of her stepmom, therapist, and a group of troubled adolescents, Ashley battles her demons, struggling to find the normal teenage life she’s always wanted. Can Ashley find the strength and courage to overcome the horrors of her past while fighting for the future she so deserves?

Hope in Patience:
Hope to heal.

Hope to grow.

Hope to evolve.

Still shattered from the horrific events of her childhood years, 15-year-old Ashley Asher is barely holding it together. Battling her vicious and vile mother who still sees her as the villain and not the victim, Ashley’s stuck in a cycle of self-injury and self-hatred as a result–despite the many people who trying to pull her out of it.

Adolescence is hard, but throw in a new school, a new family, and a father she hardly knows, Ashley’s need for self-destruction and pain intensifies. Her new therapist, Dr. Matt, may be unconventional with bizarre antics, but he’ll do whatever it takes to pull Ashley out of the doldrums. Ashley just wants a crack at normalcy. But can her counselor and the friends and family who love her teach her that “crazy is the new normal” and that nobody has it easy?

Truth in Patience:

Truth in the past.

Truth in reality.

Truth for tomorrow.

Finally adjusting to life in small town Texas, Ashley Asher sees a glimmer of what happiness really is. Even her new relationship with the attentive Joshua Brandt shows promise of a first romance. But Ashley’s fear of intimacy after years of unspeakable abuse may cause friction and distance in their relationship.

Determined to prove to her that she’s healing, Dr. Matt, her beloved therapist, shows her that “life is messy.” And he doesn’t know how messy it is about to get. When her mother decides that Ashley belongs back in their hometown with her, Ashley is forced into another family feud that she isn’t prepared for. Refusing to leave behind the new life she created in Texas, Ashley and her mother go head-to-head. But can Ashley finally find the courage and strength to battle her demons when her mother might be the biggest demon of all?

excerpt

My grandfather took the stand, his eyes seeming to burn through me. “My daughter was a struggling single parent when she met Charlie Baker seven years ago. Due to David’s abusive behavior, Cheryl left him when Ashley was only three months old, and we celebrated the day they came back home to us. We never looked back. David didn’t show the slightest interest in seeing Ashley. The only evidence of his existence was the child support payments he was bound by law to send. Charlie Baker is a great provider. I’ve never seen a man work as hard as he does, and I know that if a child I was supporting made allegations like Ashley has, it would take an act of Congress to get me to stay around. The fact that Charlie is even still willing to be part of our family after the public humiliation this incident has caused—well, it speaks to his devotion.”
Watching Papaw on the stand, it was hard to believe that this was the same man who had taught me how to ride a bike. I remembered my shaky first try without the training wheels and how Papaw ran alongside me, promising me that he wouldn’t let go of the seat until I was ready. As he walked back to his seat behind Charlie, my grandfather looked like he wanted to spit on me.
Unlike Papaw, Nanny wouldn’t look at me at all. The scent of Estée perfume trailed behind her when she walked up to the stand. She sat, and I remembered being a little kid and stomping around in her high heels, wearing her big straw hat and her “Kiss the Cook” apron over my T-shirt and jeans. She’d sit at her vanity putting on makeup, and when she’d finished, she would spray Estée on her wrists and at the hollow of her throat, then turn to me and spritz a tiny bit on my wrists.
Nanny stared at the back wall of the courtroom. “You may begin,” Judge Corn prompted. She dabbed at her eyes with a tissue, and seeing her cry made my eyes fill with tears, too. In a choked voice, she said, “My daughter . . . loves Charlie Baker with all her heart. He is completely devoted; he’s wonderful to her. He’s just . . . he’s just a good man. I am begging you, Your Honor, not to take my son-in-law away from my daughter. She’s already lost—” She looked at me at last. “So much.”
Nanny’s composure collapsed. She closed her eyes, and her face looked as if it was folding in on itself. She rose, but she held onto the railing for a moment before going back to her seat. Nanny was so close, within ten feet of me, and part of me wanted to run into her arms and tell her I was sorry for all the trouble I’d caused.
My mother nearly fell, teetering a moment on her high heels. She usually only wears flats; I guess the shoes were just part of her costume. Watching what happened in court that day, I felt like I was watching a play. I look back on it now and still can’t believe it was real.
Mom kept her eyes on Charlie the entire time she spoke, her voice shaky. “I have not been . . . a perfect mother. I tried to save money by sharing a wardrobe with Ashley, and maybe that makes me a bad parent for not buying her every little thing her heart desired whenever she wanted it.”
I looked over at Charlie, and he had tears running down his cheeks. He wasn’t even wiping them away; he was just letting them fall. I’d never seen him cry before.
“Your Honor, please don’t make my husband pay for my failures as a mother. Everything that happened is—it’s all my fault. If only I had been a better mother to Ashley Nicole—more firm with her— from the time she was a baby until she was eight, when Charlie came into our lives . . . I hate to think where we’d be today, if it weren’t for him.”
Images of hurting myself scrolled through my mind, like I was watching some kind of bizarro movie. I envisioned stabbing myself in the chest with a knife, running out in front of a tractor-trailer rig, and shooting myself in the head. I know that this always happens any time my mom shows me what kind of mother she is. It’s as predictable as pulling a chain on a ceiling fan and seeing the blades turn. Dr. Matt tells me to separate facts from crap when I start having self-destructive, spinning thoughts at times like this. But it’s easier said than done.
I found something to focus on: the stained-glass window in an archway above the judge’s bench, and I allowed the numbness that began in my chest to move on up my body, through my upper arms and shoulders to my neck, and, finally, my head, which was buzzing with whoosh. A few more minutes and the suicidal mental movie blips might or might not be there. But either way, at least I wouldn’t feel the pain that causes them.
Judge Corn said, “I will now pronounce sentencing. The defendant will rise.”

Dear girl with the red scarf,
Love was never meant to be conquered;
you have to surrender to it.
Trust me. After all, I am Mr. Universe.

When the universe conveys a message, you listen.

Olivia Montiano just caught her fiancé cheating. Now she is forced to question what she wants out of life and love. Striving to live up to her father’s unrealistic standards for the past twenty-three years, every decision she has ever made was with her father’s wishes in mind—until she finds mysterious, handwritten letters tucked away in places only meant for her. That’s when she realizes she’s been on the wrong path all along and gives her heart to a guy her father thinks is entirely wrong.

Washed-up abstract artist Nick Montgomery has had quite a few setbacks in life. He’s become accustomed to never needing anyone, thinking he’s just fine—until he meets the girl with the red scarf. She’s not his type. But the universe has other ideas. Nick has a secret he’s keeping from her, afraid it will bring their new relationship to a sudden halt.

Will they figure out what the universe holds for them?

excerpt

“Are you hurt?” He opened her door.
She inspected herself. “No … I don’t think so.”
“Are you sure?” He looked her over.
“Yes … yes, I’m fine—”
An expression of relief crossed his face. “Hey, if this is some foolish attempt to stop me from going on that date, you could have just said so.” He smiled, trying to make light of things.
“Is he right? Did I go through a red light?”
“I didn’t see what happened. What’s important is that no one got hurt,” Nick reminded her.
“Is she okay?” A stranger’s voice came from behind Nick’s shoulder.
“I’m fine,” Olivia said as she unbuckled her seat belt. With shaking limbs, she tried to slide out of her seat.
“Whoa, where do you think you’re going?”
“I need to get out …”
Reality began to set in. The space inside started to reduce in capacity. All kinds of wild scenarios filled her head. This was close. She could have died.
“I think you should wait until the ambulance comes.”
“No, you don’t understand. I can’t breathe.” Olivia’s hand went up to her chest, her breathing rapid.
Nick searched around for someone to help them. “Olivia don’t move. I’ll be right back,” Nick reassured her.
Her whole body shook. This was something Olivia never felt in her entire life, so out of control, and it frightened her even more. She grasped onto his coat with urgency, desperately not wanting him to leave her.
“Please don’t go,” she begged, catching him off guard. His eyes softened as he took her hands into his, as though to keep them warm.
“Hey, I am not going anywhere, Olivia. I promise,” he said a matter-of-factly. He brushed her hair out of her face, his stare … so intense. Olivia now realized why she always avoided direct eye contact when she saw him walking down the street. She would purposely pretend to text someone or look inside her purse, so she didn’t have to face him. It was never the question that she disliked Nick; it was because of the way he provoked something inside of her, that she couldn’t quite grasp.
“Olivia, look at me,” he said, continuing to hold her hands in his. When he got her attention, he continued. “You’re going to be okay. Trust me.”
She avoided gazing into his eyes. What was it about him that made her so compelled to give in, but felt she couldn’t? Like she wasn’t allowed to.
“Close your eyes,” Nick said.
She let out a long breath. “Okay …”
“I know this might sound lame, but it works for me when I get scared.”
She opened her eyes. “You don’t seem like the type who gets scared, Montgomery.”
“It might come to a surprise to you, but I’m human. Shocking, I know.”
“What now, Montgomery?”
“Picture yourself in a place away from here. A place quiet and safe.”
When she didn’t say anything, he continued. “Are you picturing it?”
“Shhh … I thought you said somewhere quiet. You keep on talking.”
He gave a little chuckle “Alright, where are you?”
“Hmmm … I’m on some beach with the ocean right in front of me.” She smiled. “It’s beautiful.”
“Describe it to me?” he asked.
“It’s spectacular when the sun hits the water in a certain way that it changes from turquoise to a darker blue, so vivid and bright …”
“You make me wish I was there.”
She didn’t realize at what point her body stopped shaking. She gently opened her eyes to Nick’s concerned gaze. Those soulful eyes touched her, like she been seen for the first time. She’d never been this close to him before, so close, in fact, she could see the clarity of his eyes. Every shadow and light flickered inside.
Why did she believe they were brown?
“Since when have your eyes been blue?” she asked.
He blinked several times “Ah … since I was born. Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Right. No, I’m not sure.” Olivia wondered what else about Nick Montgomery she had been completely wrong about when the sound of sirens in the near distance shifted her train of thought. The flashing lights appeared from behind him. Help had finally arrived.
